Jura Vintage Reports

Domaine de la Touraize (Arbois), Héléana Morin

We began harvesting 9th of September and finished on the 20th of September.

Lovely crop in terms of quality but small yields! The frost of Spring 2019 did not spare us!

The chardonnays and savignin suffered, Trousseau and Pinot Noir fared better, also a small crop of Ploussard. On the otherhand fermentations went very well. The juices were very balanced, in favoring fermentations. We destemmed all the reds by hand this year. We invested in 2 amphorae in which are fermenting a trousseau and a pinot noir. We have also bottled a macerated savignin (orange wine), thus a new small cuvée “Zeste de Savignin”.

2018 was a record year for us! With very long harvests, 3 ½ weeks of hand harvesting, there was a lot of fruit, of very good quality. We had to buy new vats in order to bring in the entire harvest. The harvests went very well, with a fantastic team of pickers! And a great ambiance. Work in the cellar was very long following the harvest, [in February] there are still some vats that have not finished their fermentations (by indigenous yeasts). As it was a hot year, sugar levels were high, but we are confident. This year 2018 was miraculous, we never thought to have such a beautiful crop because the Sping was so rainy. Andre Jean treated the vines often with tiny amounts of copper, each time accompanied by preparations made of horsetail and nettle. Starting June 15th it became very hot without a drop of rain until the end of August. The storms that came at the end of August saved our crop, as the vines had been suffering from a lack of water. ……Weather is wild !! … sometimes unsettling….
